A Family Tradition of Authentic Chinese Cooking in the Heart of Barry
About Us
At Wong’s Chinese Takeaway, our passion is simple: to bring authentic Chinese cuisine to the Barry community, prepared with care, tradition, and a deep respect for flavour. We are a proud family-run business, and every dish that leaves our kitchen is a reflection of the values we’ve built our name on — quality, consistency, and heart.

Our Story Begins in Guangzhou
We come from Guangzhou, a southern city known for its rich culinary heritage and food that’s as much about comfort as it is about flavour. Growing up there, we learned that food was never just food - it was how you welcomed guests, celebrated family milestones, and showed love without saying a word. There’s a kind of quiet pride in a well-cooked dish that speaks for itself, and that’s something we’ve carried with us every step of the way. When we came to Barry, we brought more than recipes - we brought experience, tradition, and the habits of a kitchen that’s been in motion for generations.
Opening our own place wasn’t a business decision so much as a continuation of what we already did at home. We knew how to feed people, how to make food that tasted right, and how to spot the difference between something decent and something you'd happily eat again tomorrow. Barry welcomed us with warmth, and we returned the gesture the best way we knew how - with freshly cooked meals, honest ingredients, and a menu that felt true to our roots.
Not Just Cantonese - A Broader Taste of China
Our family’s style of cooking is grounded in Cantonese traditions - the kind of food you’d find in Guangzhou homes and local eateries. But our menu goes well beyond that. China is a huge country with incredibly varied food cultures, and we’ve always taken pride in representing more than just one corner of it. You’ll find dishes with bold, spicy Sichuan influences sitting comfortably next to milder, savoury favourites from the south. It’s this mixture that makes our menu feel alive - full of contrast, texture, and stories behind every plate.
We never wanted to reduce Chinese food to a handful of crowd-pleasers. Don’t get us wrong, we love sweet and sour just as much as anyone - but we also know there’s so much more to explore. That’s why we include dishes that might not be as familiar to everyone, but are cooked with the same level of care and attention to balance. Whether it’s something crispy and deep-fried or something lighter and broth-based, the way we prepare it always comes from personal experience. It’s what we grew up eating, and we think it deserves a proper place on the menu - not tucked away as an afterthought.

Cooking the Way We Were Taught
One thing we’ve never done is rush our cooking. That might sound strange in a takeaway setting, but for us, that’s where it matters most. We chop our own vegetables, marinate our own meats, and prepare our sauces from scratch. There’s no shortcuts in our kitchen because, quite frankly, we wouldn’t know how to take them even if we tried. If the rice isn’t cooked properly or the wok’s not hot enough, we start again - because we’d rather get it right than send something out we’re not happy with.
We know that what people come back for isn’t just flavour - it’s consistency. It’s knowing that your favourite dish will taste just as good next week as it did the first time. That comes from experience, but it also comes from working together as a family. Everyone in our kitchen has a role to play, and we hold each other to the same high standards we grew up with. It’s not just about getting food out the door - it’s about being proud of what we serve.

Proud to Serve Barry - And Always Will Be
Barry has been our home for years now, and in that time, we’ve built something far more meaningful than a business. We’ve got regulars who know our opening hours better than we do, kids who used to come in after school who are now grown up and ordering for their own families. We see familiar faces at the counter every week, and even if the order doesn’t change much, the chat always does. That connection is what keeps us going, especially on busy nights when the phone doesn’t stop ringing.
We never set out to be the biggest or busiest - we just wanted to do things properly, and to build something lasting. We still get excited when someone tries a new dish for the first time, or when a customer tells us our food reminds them of a meal they had abroad. That kind of feedback matters, because it tells us we’re staying on track. Our job is to cook good Chinese food, keep the quality high, and treat people with the same respect we’d expect ourselves. It’s as simple as that.

Holding Ourselves to High Standards
Food safety and hygiene have always been non-negotiables for us. We understand how important trust is when it comes to food, and that’s why we work hard behind the scenes to keep everything spotless. We’ve earned a 5-star hygiene ratingfrom the Food Standards Agency, and it reflects the kind of kitchen we’d want to eat from ourselves. There are no surprises, no corner-cutting, and nothing done just for show - we clean because it’s how we were raised to keep a kitchen, not because someone’s checking.
If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like behind the scenes, we’d tell you it’s busy, warm, and smells great. Everything from the way we store our ingredients to how we prep for a busy evening has been thought through. It might not be glamorous work, but it’s honest, and it means that when you order from us, you’re getting a meal made with real care - both in how it’s cooked and how it’s handled.
